Summary
The story follows a painter, Paul Ritchie, who is on a Mediterranean cruise when his ship stops at Naples. This stirs memories of years earlier, when he lived there and found friendship with a fellow artist and love with their landlady. All three were struck down in a cholera epidemic, and only Ritchie survived. Without setting foot in the city, he finally banishes the ghosts that have haunted him. The setting reflects the time Young spent on Capri during the 1920s.
