Summary

This volume is a historical novel set in the 1830s, about a young Englishman who is sentenced to transportation to Australia for poaching. He escapes when the ship docks in South Africa, befriends a Boer family and joins their plan to flee British rule by taking part in the Great Trek. A sequel, The City of Gold, followed in 1939. It follows the same family through the Transvaal gold rush, the founding of Johannesburg and the Jameson Raid.
