Summary
Beau Ideal is the third volume of Wren’s Foreign Legion trilogy and the ‘American’ novel of the set. It follows Otis Vanbrugh, brother of Hank and Mary Vanbrugh from Beau Sabreur. Otis and Mary leave a tyrannical father in Wyoming and tour Europe. Their travels then take them to North Africa, where their story becomes entangled with the events of Beau Geste and Beau Sabreur. The main thread of the story is Otis’s devotion to Isobel Geste. She asks him to find her husband, John, who has vanished in Africa while looking for his old friends Hank and Buddy. Otis, who loves her, joins the Foreign Legion hoping to be sent to the penal battalion where John may be held. The novel also reveals what really happened the night the Blue Water jewel was stolen, and it is described as a tale of ‘ideal and platonic love’. The subject book carries a note saying it is a complete, self-contained novel that is also the last of the trilogy.
