Summary
Far Forest follows three generations of the Wilden family and their lives in a stone cottage in the Gladden Valley, on the northern border of Shropshire. The main characters are the cousins David and Jenny, of the family’s youngest generation, who fall in love at first sight as children. The setting is the real Wyre Forest, but Young renamed it ‘Werewood’, and the ‘Gladden Brook’ is, in reality, Dowles Brook. A reader noted that David and his father, Jem, contrast the forest with the grimy industrial life of North Bromwich (in reality, the city of Birmingham) and the coal-ridden valleys of South Wales.
