Summary

The book is a semi-autobiographical work written as a series of letters from a young European woman in Africa to her mother in Britain. The letters date from 1907 to 1912. They describe, in a chatty style, the rigours of domestic life in Salisbury and the raising of a family. Sally Mackenzie arrives in Rhodesia in August 1907 to marry Toby Macdonald, when the colony was still very young. The tone is cheerful and humorous, and the book is about household and settler life rather than politics. It is a white settler’s account and reflects the colonial attitudes of its day.
