Summary
The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems, mostly parodies or deliberately comic retellings. They were supposedly written by ‘Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor’, a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. He began contributing them to the newly founded Bentley’s Miscellany in 1837, as tales that were mostly in verse and sometimes in prose. Bentley compiled them into books in 1840, 1842 and 1847. Typical tales mix Gothic spookery, medieval folklore and slapstick. Examples are ‘The Spectre of Tappington’ and ‘The Dead Drummer of Salisbury Plain’.
