There was a (Warrnambool) Ladies Rowing Club from about 1913. They were autonomous with their own shed, committee and coaches.
The photograph is of a ladies crew in a sweep four. They are beside the bank of the Hopkins River, Warrnambool.
The back of the photograph has "Before a training spin on the Hopkins River 1936".
The people are L to R: Kathy McMeel (secretary), Annie Blanch (Boat Captain), Joanne Bone (president), James Tait (director of Gwen and Edna Jones and Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundations, Susan Finnigan (Grants Officer) and Clive Wooster (treasurer). • In February 2017 the club filled the base of the boathouse and poured a new concrete floor. • They had an opening to thank the donors, especially the Gwen and Edna Jones and Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundations and to celebrate with the community and rowers, past and present • Since 1996 rowers had to wade in foul, ankle to thigh high water to access the boat shed- this was for 3-5 months of every year- our facilities are now accessible and Warrnambool has a sporting venue for rowers that is safe and one the public can be proud of. • The Club thanked Barry Wilson for generously donating the plans and acknowledged the ‘term deposit’ raised over the last 10 years, by past and present members, which allowed the Club to contribute the additional funding required. • In particular The Foundations assistance made the project possible. The two philanthropic Foundations are a treasure for the community as they can step in and fill the gap where other funding sources cannot. In our case they were the major donors and we could not have contemplated this project without their assistance. We are truly grateful for the assistance of The Gwen and Edna Jones and Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation. • Mr James Tait, a director of both Foundations to unveiled the commemorative plaque.

Redevelopment notice of the City of Warrnambool Rowing Club - the club flooded annually for 3-4 months a year (since being built in 1996) and in 2017 the Club raised the floor level -so it no longer floods. To celebrate the Club hosted a 'shed opening' for the donors and community. Funding: Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation $30,000, Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation $4,000, City of Warrnambool Rowing Club $13,000.

The City of Warrnambool Rowing Club (CoWRC) received a grant from the Warrnambool City Council Community Development Fund for the project: to hold a public event to install a plaque – dedicated to members and ex members who enlisted in WW1. The original honor roll had been lost to history. The date chosen was August 7 as this was 100 years since the death of a particular member, Major Thomas (Tom) Redford. Process: the Club wrote a book about its 140 year history and learnt of the honor roll. Every effort to find it was exhausted. The Club applied for funds to produce a replacement plaque and have a public event to unveil it. Outcome: There is now a permanent plaque in the rowing ‘prescient’ on the Hopkins River.

The Club learnt of a memorial plaque dedicated to the to the Warrnambool Rowing Club members who enlisted for World War One, when writing the Clubs history. Every member of military age enlisted. The original plaque was unveiled in November 1916 and a Norfolk Pine planted on the Hopkins River bank - in memory of T. Redford.The tree stands however the plaque has not been found. The Club has updated the names and had a new plaque made. On 7th August 2016 - 101 years after one rower- Major Thomas Redford died - it was rededicated. The flyer is the advertisement / invitation for the day.

A medal held in the Price family won by William Price in 1908. Reported on page 2 on the 2nd January 1908 the results of a regatta held in Colac the day before. The Warrnambool A.N.A. team won the Friendly Society’s Fours.

This book was launched on 21 February 2016. It details the history of the City of Warrnambool Rowing Club (CoWRC) and includes the five rowing clubs that have operated on the Hopkins River, Warrnambool and been absorbed by CoWRC .

Williamson cox. “As its name suggests, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (MUIOOF) had its origins in Manchester, England. It was established in Melbourne in 1840 when Augustus Greeves, a member of the MUIOOF in England, migrated to Australia. On his arrival in Melbourne, Greeves teamed up with journalist Thomas Strode, to form the first lodge—The Australia Felix Lodge. The lodge received its Constitution on 7 December 1840 and this is recognised as the birth date of Manchester Unity in Victoria.”

Mrs George Rolfe was the wife of the owner of Lyndoch. He was a Melbourne tea merchant, who owned 216 acres of the Shipley estate further up the Hopkins River. In the late 1870s he bought 2 acres of land and house along the Hopkins near the bridge and developed into Lyndoch. By 1883 he increased to 50 acres. He resoiled the land, put in a water supply reservoir, water tanks and pumps, a reticulation system and a windmill- 50 feet high with four sails 18 feet high and 4 1/2 wide. Warrnambool Rowing Club held regattas on the Hopkins River from about 1885. This was initially over a weekend in conjunction with Colac Rowing Club. Hamilton Rowing Club started a regatta after Colac moved theirs to the Barwon in Geelong. The western Victorian clubs also had a rowing association.

Warrnambool Rowing Club had a boxing day regatta from 1885. The land beside the club was owned by the Rolfes who be-quested it to be an aged care home- presently called Lyndoch.
