Nullawarre State School No.1652 opened in 1875 on a site donated by George Henry. The weatherboard school was 27ft by 18ft. Margaret Mathieson was the first of the 17 pupils registered. The first head teacher was Charles A Bruford. The first building was replaced with a new building by 1975 when the celebrations took place. A brief history of Nullawarre township and some of its early residents is also included. Early families include Mathieson, Burleigh, LeCouteur, Wallace and Hesketh. A photograph of the Nirranda and District WWI Honor Roll details those from the Nullawarre area who served. Today the school has been enlarged and is now Nullawarre and District Primary School.

This booklet is significant as it provides a history of Nullawarre school and an overview of the Nullawarre district and some of its early residents.

This test aimed at Year 6 students dates from 1904 and includes some complex written arithmetic problems, grammar analysis and an essay on 'Clothing'.

This test sheet is significant as an example of the level expected of Class VI students in 1904.

The Warrnambool and District Pig Breeders', Agents and Buyers' Association was responsible for inspecting pigs. During the early 20th century the pig industry was included as part of the dairy industry. After milk was separated the cream went to the factory and the skim milk went back to the farm to feed the pigs. Early newspaper reports include information relating to the price of bacon in the list of dairy goods. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory commenced a bacon factory in the early 1900s but it was a short-lived operation.

This licence is significant as it assists in understanding the relationship between the dairy industry and the pig industry.

This tin belonged to Doug Burleigh and was used by his family as a tea caddy. The Burleigh family were early settlers in the Nullawarre area. James Burleigh was a director of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and undertook an overseas farm study tour to the United Kingdom in the late 1930s.

These Australiana tea caddies are significant as an item with aesthetic and interpretive capacity. It was common in many households on the mantelpiece for ready access. It was also a means for Bushells to advertise their product.

An octagonal tin tea caddy decorated with embossed Australian animals in full colour on each side -kangaroo, emu, koala and kookaburra; light blue background and top and a circular lid with the brand name imprinted. A red-edged adhesive label is on the side with the kangaroo.

This cigarette case belonged to Allan Orr of Addington. In later years Mrs Doris Orr used the tin to store hair roller pins. The cigarette case was donated to the museum by their daughter.

This cigarette case is useful as an example of smoking accessories during a time when smoking was common practice.

This thermometer came from the Orr family at Addington. Archibald Orr, father and son, were butchers as well as farmers. B Heller & Co was founded in 1896 in Chicago and was well known for its sausage making and preservatives.

The thermometer provides an insight into the manner early butchers processed meat.

A cylindrical wooden case containing a bulb thermometer with markings for boiling various meats - hams, bacon, corned beef and pickled pork. The bulb at the contains balls of mercury.

This jar of ointment belonged to Doris Orr, mother of the donor. Families used these patent medicines which were often purchased from a door to door salesman, the 'Rawleigh's man', on his regular round to country homes.

Rawleigh's patent medicines were in common use in homes and this is a typical example.

This cruet set belonged to the Orr family of Addington, family of the donor.

This is typical of a table condiment set.

This cruet set has a diamond-shaped silver plated tray with four knobs for legs. A hoop-shaped frame is screwed underneath and holds four circular frames for holding condiment bottles. The frame has a truncated triangular top. Four crystal cut bottles with a diamond pattern fit into the framework. Two have crystal cut glass stoppers and two have silver-plated lids. One silver lid is hinged and has a spoon hole and the other has many small holes (for pepper?).

Heavy metal belt-joiner tool painted green with hinged pieces. Inside a brass comb-like piece is attached with three screws. A row of staples is inserted into the comb and a hook slides through to lock in place when repairing a belt. A flat section on the top is hit with a hammer to knit the metal staples together.

For many years the Heywood Cheese Factory was an important part of life for Heywood and district farming and a vital place of employment for up to 40 men and 10 women. The factory opened in 1939 as a subsidiary of the Portland Butter Factory before becoming a world renowned cheese making enterprise. It was felt important to document its history from the surviving factory workers, including dairy suppliers and milk truck drivers. We hear their stories of the long hours and hard work without penalty rates, travelling unsealed roads and mixed with their humour of the bygone days is an important acknowledgement of that era. This oral history provides significant material relating to the dairy industry in south west Victoria during the mid 20th century. The interviews give first-hand recollections of the interviewees involvement in the industry from a point of view of factory workers, milk pick-up drivers and farmers.

This is the story of the women of the bush, women who performed more than the traditional duties of wife and mother. They worked alongside their men, through good/times and bad and they were rare to complain. Six former country women of the Portland/Heywood district provide us with a snapshot of life as it was from the 1920's through to the 1960's. They speak about their own and their mother's lives, lives which have experienced the greatest material and personal changes in history. The story of the 'Remarkable Mary Stuchbery' details the struggles of a wife and family whose husband/father contracted polio shortly after returning from WWII service. Garry Kerr has produced a series of local history stories, initially for the Heywood [history group] and more recent items privately.

The material contained in these interviews provides a first-hand insight into the experiences of women who were involved in carving farms from virgin bush. Their recollections of work, social activities and opportunities for their children are an invaluable primary source.

These hand painted bowls were the work of Ethel Mary Ellen Hose who married Albert Ernest Uebergang in 1917, who was an uncle of Ray and Joyce Uebergang. After leaving the family farm at Cudgee the couple moved to Surrey Hills in Melbourne. [Ref: p.228 The Uebergang Families in Australia] The donor, Heather Mclean, daughter of Charles Henry Uebergang, is a cousin of Ray and Joyce Uebergang. A visitor to the museum in March 2018 advised that the bowl with no 'U' was a replacement piece. It is unsigned and undated.

This fruit set indicates the work of amateur china painters and is in pristine condition.

This catalogue belonged to Alderdice Brass Foundry in Warrnambool. It was donated to the museum by John Downing from the foundry. The catalogue is for the firm of J Bartram & Son who were suppliers of dairy equipment. They were one of the earliest suppliers of mechanical milking machines in Victoria.

The catalogue is significant as it is from an early dairy supplier and shows early dairy equipment. The Alderdice Brass Foundry has been in operation since the 19th century.

This ice-cream freezer was used by Ruth Gore's mother to make ice-cream for the ---- family. Ice-cream mixture was beaten and placed in the inner cylinder; ice and salt were placed in the surrounding outer cylinder. When the ice-cream was partially frozen it was removed from the container and beaten a second time before being replaced in the container to set. (other info -check with Ruth -where lived, mother's name, when used, how often, etc)

This exercise book was donated by Donna Daly, who found it among her parents belongings. Her parents were Josie and Tich Kelly and she was unsure of the connection with A Carroll.

This document is significant as it indicates records kept on-farm by some farmers. It records prices received for milk, calves, pigs and the amount of the government subsidy during this period which covers the time of World War II. It provides an interesting comparison with the Taylor milk passbook from 1895 and associated milk slips which are also held by Warrnambool Cheese & Butter Factory.

This toy belonged to Graeme McLeod and was used during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was then used by his children during the 1970s and 1980s.

Kraft Walker commenced cheese processing at Allansford in 1935 under a lease arrangement with Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. This arrangement remained in place until Kraft officially ceased bulk cheese production at Allansford in February 1993. Kraft was responsible for farm collection of milk which was then shared between the two companies -Kraft for bulk cheese manufacture and Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory for whole milk, milk powder and butter manufacture. Laboratory technicians tested milk and cheese during the receival and manufacturing processes to ensure a high quality product. Derek Shaw, whose notebook this is, was the first person in charge of the Kraft Allansford laboratory. He kept notes of testing undertaken and recorded results of anything considered unusual. This notebook is one in a series of 33. Les O'Callaghan commenced work in the laboratory as Derek Shaw's assistant and technician in charge following Derek's retirement. He too kept notebooks of test results.

Kraft laboratory technician/bio-chemist Les O'Callaghan was responsible for the introduction of a number of quality control measures which are still in use in the dairy industry today. Les was mentored by Derek Shaw. This note book provides an insight into the dairy processing industry at this period.

Part of the Uebergang Collection. Made by the firm of Triaca & Picchi. Camilo Triaca (1887-1972) was a sculptor born Tuscany, Italy. He arrived in Melbourne in 1909 and practised his craft in Richmond, Melbourne, before returning to Italy in 1914 to serve in the Italian Army. He returned to Melbourne in 1923 and continued to sculpt at his Richmond home before relocating to Fitzroy. A 1927 image of workers at his studio workshop taking a lunch break is in the Italian Historical Society collection (http://trove.nla.au/version172106091). The workshop was situated at 76-78 King William St, Fitzroy.

The family often re-used, recycled and repaired items and examples can be seen in the museum. This petrol pump is part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. As with many rural families the Uebergangs had bulk fuel supplies on-farm. The bowser was used to refuel farm machinery. Mobil's Super Plume petrol was one of the many brands of petrol available from the late 1920s. No electricity was required to work this bowser as it was gravity fed. The amount of petrol was selected by the position of the front lever. Petrol was then pumped into the bowl by the handle on the side of the bowser and gravity=fed to the vehicle.

Perfect Cheese Company was founded in 1930 by newly-arrived Italian migrant Natale Paquale Italiano. The company specialised in traditional Italian-style cheese but also produced Greek, Cypriot and Maltese origin cheeses. The cheeses were sold in Australia and Italy with all products being matured and non-processed. The company remained in operation until the early 2000s.

This weighing machine is significant as it represents the machinery used by an early cheese production company.
