Griffith Point had earlier been so named after Mr Griffiths, a fisherman.

The Argus, July 9, 1888. At a public meeting, the inhabitants of Griffiths Point decided unanimously on the suggestion of Mr Fraser that the name of the newly proclaimed township should be named San Remo.
