Powder compacts evolved from small boxes of loose face powder. Those with a self-opening lid were generally made after 1948.

Significance

Loose face powder compacts were commonly used until the 1960's and gradually became more of a utilitarian object. This item is representative of the period when compacts were an essential cosmetic accessory.

Physical description

A round ornate gold coloured powder compact. In the bottom is a spring for the powdrr compartment. It has a metal filter and it still contains some loose face powder
