- Comedy Festival: Jason Byrne goes for low-hanging fruit Comedy Festival: Jason Byrne goes for low-hanging fruit Reviewed By Cameron Woodhead Published: April 5, 2014 - 12:53PM COMEDY FESTIVAL The Athenaeum, Until April 20 Irish stand-up Jason Byrne makes quite an entrance, swinging across the stage in his undies, with a repulsive merkin popping out of them, in parody of the music video to Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball. Melbourne Comedy Festival ticket info It's a high watermark, sophistication-wise. Byrne's gags leave us up to our ears in bums, balls and bitches. It's almost inevitable the show will lead to a duel with an audience member using strap-on dildos. His material often relies on stereotypes of wives and husbands, or on heterosexual male insecurities - the immature discomfort, say, of a straight guy shoving a suppository up his arse. (Well, at least Byrne doesn't mention lady Asian doctors, I suppose, but it's still a Tim Mathieson level of comedy.) Byrne does have a certain rambunctious appeal, despite all the low-hanging fruit, and his improvised engagement with the audience is swift and deadly.
