Watch his massive hands flutter and twitch. Feel the pent-up electricity shaking his gangly limbs. Taste the blood of the crowd when he jerks into the vintage Midnight Oil slammer, Bus To Bondi. On face value, there's nothing whatsoever amiss with his Alter Egos, a band with a collective pedigree befitting any Oz rock giant, including Oils guitarist Martin Rotsey, ace drummer Peter "Lucky" Luscombe and Jet bassist Mark Wilson. As on Garrett's new record, A Version of Now, their restrained, sinewy feel is the perfect vehicle for plainspoken songs of homecoming, reflection and reaffirmation, from the pointed defiance of I'd Do It Again to the bluesy strut of Only One – a love song, no less. In homages to Skyhooks, the Saints and Divinyls, band and audience are one in a reverie of gratitude and delight. Guitarist Abbe May steals the latter. She and keyboardist Rosa Morgan nail the fever of En Vogue's Free Your Mind, though Garrett's high harmony is no less soulful. There's plenty of weight, too, in his own Great White Shark, Tall Trees and especially It Still Matters, with its spine-tingling insistence that "There is dignity, there is hope/ There is light at the end of the road". But as satisfying as this moment is, Garrett's teasing allusions to next year's Oils reunion, and underplayed encores of Dead Heart and I Don't Wanna Be the One manage to point forward with a scintillating sense of anticipation. Yep, Garrett is back. But he's just gearing up.
