It is believed the ball on the tower flag pole was raised and lowered to indicate when mail had been sorted and was ready.
Significance
Previously unknown image of Ballarat. The set and its subjects indicate these images were produced to promote Ballarat and were perhaps aimed at tourists.

Ballarat Post Office, ne corner Sturt and Lydiard Streets, image not dated but tower erected 1885. In foreground Burke and Wills memorial fountain, erected 1867.
