Historical information

The Indian rupee is the official currency of the Republic of India. Notes of all denominations issued by the Reserve Bank of India after independence have the Ashoka Pillar and the Seal of Reserve Bank of India.
The first banknote printed by independent India was a 1 rupee note.

Significance

Indian 1 and 2 rupee notes were discontinued in 1995 and only coins used. However The Reserve Bank of India will soon put new one rupee currency notes back into circulation.

Physical description

A greyish green 1 rupee paper Indian note. One one side is a picture of a one rupee coin in the top left corner and "GOVERNMENT OF INDIA" with Indian script below.
On the other side is "GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ONE RUPEE" and the serial number. It is signed by the Secretary, Minister of Finance.In the top right corner is a picture of the Ashoka Pillar.
