DeQuincey’s essay sequence is described as a continuous discussion of style and rhetoric, originally these essays on style and rhetoric first appeared serially in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine in the 1840s. William Blackwood and Sons, a Scottish publishing house and printer was founded by William Blackwood in Edinburgh in 1804. He became famous both as a book publisher and as the publisher of the influential literary magazine Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine.
