Historical information

The original oil painting was discovered at Army Museum Bandiana, unframed and badly damaged. Repairs were made by Albury artist Shirley Monte and the canvas was framed by 8/13 VMR museum staff. It hung in the VMR museum till its closure in 2009 when the painting was returned to Army Museum Bandiana. This print was made during reframing.
Captain Percy Herbert Cherry MC was awarded the Victoria Cross for his action during the capture of Lagnicourt on 26 March 1917. Cherry was serving in the 26th Battalion AIF which was Albert Borella’s battalion. The painting show Captain Cherry as he rushes the enemy position in the stable yard of a large farm on the edge of the village. Cherry was killed by shell fire the following day. Albert Borella, a keen amateur painter and himself a VC recipient, was an Albury resident from 1945 till his death in 1968.
