Historical information

The 17th Battery (Albury Battery) Militia volunteered en masse in September 1915. It was hoped they would remain together in the newly raised 13th Battery AIF under the command of their Battery Commander Major Joseph Shellshear. However the Army thought it unwise to have such a concentration of men from one town in a single unit and the effect on that town of heavy casualties, so half stayed with the 13th Battery which became known as the (Albury Battery) and the remainder were allocated to other batteries of the 1st and 2nd Divisions. The 'Welcome Home' function included all the volunteers from the original militia battery, the two colour parches acknowledging the units in which they served.
