The University of Melbourne System Garden was created by the first professor of Natural Science Frederick McCoy in 1856. It was originally comprised of a series of concentric garden beds, aorganised acording to plant classification. The only remnant from that time is the tower which formed the centre of the octagonal glasshouse.
