Perseus is the work of J. Cranari who was sctive in the 1880s. It was presented to the National Gallery of Victoria by James Chapman in 1885, before being de-accessioned and transferred to Ballarat in 1943.

In 2008 it was removed from its Camp Street location and underwent conservation treatment, Pegasus was moved to the Robert Clark Centre at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
