The rail crash featured in the image occurred at Sunbury station in January 1919 as was the result of signal failure along the tracks, which in turn caused a collision between two trains travelling in the op[posite direction along the same tracks.
Significance
This one of a number of train fatalities that have occurred on the Sunbury - Bendigo line.

A non-digital black and white photograph with a white border in post card format of a steam train and its carriages on its side. Workmen are working to prepare the engine to be lifted back onto the tracks.
