Historical information

In 1999 a referendum was held in Australia to determine whether a Republic would be established with the Queen of England and the Australian Governor- General being replaced by a President elected by two thirds of the members of the Australian Government. The Republican referendum failed with 54.8 % of voters being opposed to the Republican model offered. These badges were issued by the groups mounting the campaign in favour of a Republic.
