Historical information
The photograph shows the Royal Mail wagon outside Herbert's General Store in the main street of Orbost. This store was one of the first in Orbost, located in the lower (southern) section of Nicholson Streety. Lancelot Herbert had come to Orbost in c.1886 to become a partner in the store with Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Herbert bought out the partnership. Progressively, the Herbert family went on to own many businesses in Orbost, Cann River and Noorinbee.
Significance
This is a pictorial record of transport in 19th century Orbost. It is associated with the Herbert family.
