Prior to the outbreak of WWII, Germany had an extensive porcelain export trade. Mass-produced and affordable, it was instrumental in developing home decor within the middle and lower classes. This particular example has a sentimental edge - gifting such trinkets as a token of affection was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
