Pupils from Ringwood and Croydon schools will have a say in how the local environment is developed.Maroondah City Council has asked schools for their opinions on developing a fresh environment plan for the municipality. -- Hundreds of volunteers were thanked for their loyal work last week during a cocktail party hosted by Martoondah City Council. Chief Commissioner Morton Browne thanked the "many committed and dedicated volunteers". A questionnaire will be distributed in Maroondah during the next fortnight to seek residents' opinions on future public open space areas, such as parklands and reserves.

Ringwood City Council will call for more tenders for the animal pound after rejecting the first round of bidders. Commissioner John Nathan said that the council was unhappy with the three bidders. Mr Nathan said the bidders were either too expensive, too far away or there were other problems.

Support will be given to local schools in their dealings with the State Government's restructuring process, Ringwood Council decided this week. Council has expressed concens with local radio station ECB FM's proposed rule changes which, according to a council report, attempts to remove any influence of Ringwood Coucil from the station. Council has recommended $3130 be budgeted next financial year for a sharps disposal service for prescribed intravenous drug users.

Australian citizenship was granted to 45 Ringwood residents on Monday night in a ceremony at Ringwood Convention centre. The 37 adults and eight children came from South Africa, Britain, Nigeria, New Zealand, Hungary, the Philipines and Tonga. Mayor, Cr Margaret Cheevers welcomed the new citizens.

Debate over the level of support Ringwood Council should give to schools fighting closure led to one successful and one unsuccessful motion on Monday night's council meeting. Cr Nick Kirmos and Cr Neil McDonald were the instigators of the two motions. Cr Kirmos' motion was successful and Cr McDonald's was not.

Communication lines between residents and Ringwood Council or even Councillors have not always been straightforward and clear cut. Ms Tessa Melland suggested that concerned people should maybe form an association which led to the formation of Ringwood Residents' and Ratepayers' Association. "I see it as being a communications forum where people can get together and discuss things locally, things they want to change or initiate", Ms Melland said.

The line from Hawthorn to Camberwell opened on 3 April, 1882, Camberwell to Lilydale opened on 1 December, 1882. Box Hill, Ringwood and Croydon stations opened on 1 December, 1882. Croydon was originally called Warrandyte station until the name was changed to Croydon on 1 August, 1884. Nunawading was originally called Tunstall and opened on 4 June, 1888. The name was changed to Nunawading on 1 November, 1945.
