Letter from E.T. Miles to Mr Phil McCallum, Ringwood and District Cricket Association, from E.T. Miles outlining milestones in the life of his father, A.T. Miles
Letter from E.T. Miles to Mr Phil McCallum, Ringwood and District Cricket Association, from E.T. Miles outlining milestones in the life of his father, A.T. Miles
5 Inglis Street Sale 3850, 5th December 1986. Dear Mr McCallum, My apologies for not replying to your letter dated 11th November. I did write out one but was not happy with it. Strange as it may seem my father left very little on paper of his achievements and wanderings around the world before settling in Ringwood. He certainly left no diaries. As you know, he was born in Tasmania (Hobart). He went to Hawaii in the early 1900s and almost took out American Naturalization Papers. In 1907 he was in Malaya & Siam (Thailand) and assisted with the construction of the first tin mining dredge at Puket in Siam. His father was a sea-captain in sailing ships and was the prime mover of this dredging venture. He (my father) eventually came to Ringwood in 1910 and bought an orchard adjoining the Ringwood Railway Station on the southern side (Station St. Kendall St. & James St.). My mother thought it was too suburban, so they sold it and planted an orchard in North Ringwood, just inside the now Ringwood boundary on the Old Warrandyte Road. It was two miles from Ringwood. As well as having the largest quince orchard in Australia and possibly southern hemisphere he grew apples. I believe we had about 22 acres of quinces and 15 acres of apples. He was always interested in sports and was a public minded man. Apart from having a football & cricket interest, he was on the tennis club committee and was one of the original committee of the Croydon Golf Club. He sered a few years in the Lilydale Council and as you mentioned was the main person behind the severing of Ringwood Borough from the Shire. He was first mayor and served six years in all as mayor. He retired but came back in for I believe two years before resigning again. He moved from the orchard in 1917 and lived in Warrandyte Road about two doors from where his father had a property near the Mullum Creek and which is now owned by the Church of England. I hope this is of some value to you and if anything more is required let me know. My father played golf and tennis but not cricket or football at Ringwood. Yours faithfully, (signed) E.T. Miles.
