Margaret Sutherland was the daughter of the first may of the Borough of Clunes, Charles Tytler Sutherland. He was elected Council Member 8/10/1861, elected Chairman 25/2/1862, elected Mayor 1/10/1863 - 8/8/1867, resigned from council 14/2/1867. He served as a councilor and mayor in the 1930's

Historical information

The Clunes Knitting Mill in Fraser Street, Clunes was the former Salvation Army Barracks which were moved from Bailey Street, Clunes to Fraser Street, Clunes by tractor in 1918. The Country Townspeople's League was founded in Clunes it's mission was to campaign to decentralise industry and provide manufacturing and employment opportunities in country Victoria, specifically at that time, for the continued financial support of the Clunes Knitting Mills located in Fraser Street, Clunes, Victoria. A Bill to give effect to the proposed Clunes Country Industries Policy was to be introduced at the assembly of the new Victorian Parliament in around 1921.

Seated left; Hilda McNeill. b.1887, Standing: Edith Ursula McNeil b.1884, Seated right: Isabella Clark McNeil (Daisy) b.1882 Isabella born Glendaruel, her mother was Ursula McMurray whose family had a farm at Glenndaruel. After Isabella's birth mother and child returned to the family farm at Undera, near Shepparton. Isabella is the grandmother of Lindsay Semmens who donated this portrait.
