PUBLIC MEETING AT CLUNES Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Thursday 7 July 1887, page 8 By Telegraph From Our Corresponcent CLUNES, Wednesday A large meeting of ladies was held this afternoon in the town-hall, to take into con-sideration the best means of assisting Lady Loch's fund for distressed women. Mr. J. E. Meyers, the mayor, presided. It was proposed by Miss Downes and seconded by Mrs. Harle- "That the suggestion of Lady Lock that the Queen's Jubilee should be commemorated by the establishment of a national benevolence to be known as the Queen's Fund, which would be dedicated to the relief of women throughout the colony who have been placed in circumstances of distress, and for whom no other adequate or suitable provision exists, is a proposal to which this meeting representing the women and girls of Clunes accords its most The motion was carried unanimously. Mrs. J. F. Weikhardt moved and Mrs. Bruce Gardyne seconded- "That thos present present form themselves into a com-mitee, with power to add to their number, for the purpose of raising local contributions to the fund". The motion was carried, 15 ladies forming the committee. Mrs. Bruce Gardyne was appointed president, Miss Downes secretary and Mrs. Meyers treasurer.
