Sandy was the only horse repatriated back to Australia from WW1. Australia sent 136,000 horses to the front. It was estimated that 8 million horses in total were killed.
Sandy belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges who was fatally shot at Gallipoli. His dying wish was for his horse to be returned home.

Significance

Only Dead Soldier to be returned to Australia from WW1. Only horse to be returned to Australia.
