Historical information

This is the home of Annie Castledine and her children, widow of Arthur Frederick Castledine.
The property is now the present day site of Araluen. Araluen provides quality supports for adults with intellectual disabilities throughout Melbourne’s north-east suburbs.

Significance

Son George, Sapper George Ernest Castledine VX10044 was the first soldier from the Eltham District to be killed in the Second World War, an event that ultimately resulted in the women and men of the district raising funds to create the Eltham War Memorial to benefit the children of the district as a living memorial in memory of the fallen soldiers of the district in that war.
