Soldier is thought to be Sergeant Walter Edward Payne who served as Private No 1116 with the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles contingent and following Federation with the 8th Light Horse (VMR).

Historical information
Sergeant Payne was selected as one of three representatives from the 8th Light Horse to a review of the King's Banners presented to Australian regiments following the South African campaign. The review was held 14 November 1904. The Banner is now on display in the History Room of the 8/13th Victorian Mounted rifles, Simpson Barracks , Melbourne.
