8th Australian Light Horse Regiment was raised following Federation from companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles in North East Victoria. It was an all volunteer force of citizen soldiers. The annual encampment, usually conducted over the Easter break, was the culmination of training conducted in local areas throughout the year.
