Jack Barker started teaching at the Ballarat School of Mines, and was later appointed its Principal. He moved to the tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines were he became the inaugural Director of the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education at Mt Helen, a predecessor institution of Federation University.
