Historical information
The medal was awarded to the school children of Australia in 1951 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Federation of Australia.
The competition in 1950, with the valuable cash prize of two hundred guineas, for the design the medallion was won by John Elischer, a Melbourne sculptor.
The medallion bears an image of a man hand sowing wheat with the dates 1901-1951 on one side.
The reverse has wheat growing to represent the seven states of Australia and the words ‘Fifty years Commonwealth of Australia’.
