The Australian Tesselated Tile Co. began in Mitcham, south of the Railway Station, in 1886. It almost collapsed after the bursting of the land boom in 1890s, then recovered to become one of the world's greatest tile works. It made a greater range of tiles than any other known tile works, here or overseas.
