Significance

An example of the evolution of irons some of which date from the 1830s

Physical description

Cast iron charcoal burning clothes iron. The main body has a lid which is opened by a handle which swings across to unlock the lid and swings back to lock under two brackets. The iron has a wooden handle and is supported by an upright which is cracked and wired together. There is a tin chimney attached to the outlet on the main body of the iron and a small trapdoor in the back.
