Built in 1864 by August Schwerkolt, the cottage was headed for demolition in 1963. Local residence rose up in protest, which led to the Nunawading Council purchasing the cottage and five acres of the surrounds in 1964. By 1965 the cottage had been restored and was opened on 17th October 1965 by Sir Rohan Delecombe, governor of Victoria.
