Headwear - Emu plume

Historical information

A plume of emu feathers was worn in the puggaree of the slouch hat by Australian Light Horse. The tradition was continued by Australian armoured regiments wearing a smaller tuft of emu plumes behind the hat badge on the black beret. In 1992, the slouch hat with plumes was reintroduced as the official head dress of the Roya Australian Armoured corps although the black beret continues to be worn as work dress.
