This is a set of 24 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa circa 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival in locations inside Fortuna Villa and its surrounding gardens. The Ball and Dinner was held in the gardens of Fortuna Villa and in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. Australian Army Catering Corps staff provided the catering. Refer to item 6455.14P for additional photographs taken at the Summer Ball. This three-photograph group is the fifth in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The postcards are from his personal album, and many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Refer to Cat No 893 for his service details. Three photographs taken by a commercial photographer in Killarney Ireland. These photographs illustrate how men from different units relaxed together on leave. 1. A group of AIF soldiers enjoying leave outside the Graham Hotel, Killarney. The soldier on left is a corporal in 2nd Division Pioneers, next to him is a private in the 1st Division, then a signaller from 5th Division with two years' overseas service chevrons and two wound stripes, RSM Hector Dawson, 57th Btn, then a Gallipoli veteran with what seems to be a Fifth Division patch, unknown, and lastly a 1st Division sergeant. 2. A relaxed group outside the Graham Hotel. RSM Dawson is third from the right. Second from the left is an officer of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 3. RSM Dawson (hatless) and comrades setting off to likely see the famous local lakes.
Each photograph is inscribed on verso "To dear Mother and Father, with love from Heck, Killarney" with the date.

On this parade WO1 Bill Jones received his commission and by promotion to Captain from CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol. Command of the unit was handed over to LTCOL Rob McHenry. It is probable the commissioning and handover ceremonies occurred on the CO’s Parade. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was CO from 1989 to 1992 and LTCOL Rob McHenry was CO from 1992 to 1993.

The main tasks undertaken by technicians operating the KLIMSCH Commodore large format camera were enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. seen in photo .1P is at the operating console. See item 6189.4P for more information and photos of CPL Whaling operating the KLIMSCH camera. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation shown in photos .3P and .4P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. See items 6124.5P and 6133.4P for more photographs of orthorectification equipment.

But has striped lining in the arms. It has a ribbon bar showing four medals and i M.I.D. leaf. The arms have a circular red/black colour patch, 3.3 cm diameter. 2. Khaki trousers - Two side pockets, one hip pocket. 3. Sam Browne belt - tan leather. Brass fittings includes sword holder. 4. Scabbard, tan leather with a silver top. Suits a sword. 5. Hat - peaked, khaki with dark Rising Sun Badge. 6. Belt - khaki woollen with dark copper buckle. Inside belt are light brown buttons. 7. Tie - Khaki woollen. 8. Brown leather flying helmet worn to keep warm. Fully enclosed down to shoulders with an opening for the face. Small buckle on each side at the point of the ears. Series of six holes around each ear. Some seams are coming apart.

"John Patrick Kelly" No. 2077, enlisted 26/5/15 in the 3rd Reinforcements in 24th Battalion, at age 28. Served in Gallipoli and France. Was WIA on 5/8/16 and discharged 15/6/17 due to his injuries.
A.4 size, typed letter containing a general reference for John Patrick Kelly from his Platoon Captain, dated at top and signed at the bottom, recomm3ending him as a good honest employee.

Letter in relation to unidentified soldier. Son of Mrs. Barbour, presumably a member of the Victorian Regiment, who died of illness during the Boer War during the year of 1900 in South Africa. Believed to be Private Robert Barbour S/N 94, who died of Enteric Fever at Bloemfontein on 6 May 1900.

Part of the Cooper Collection. Ribbons belonged to "HERBERT CHARLES NOTT" No. 228. Enlisted 19/8/1914 in B.Coy 6th Bn age 30 yrs, 6 mths. Embarked for Egypt and Gallipoli on 5/4/1915. Sent to hospital 2/7/1915 with dysentry. Embarked for France 25/3/1916. Hospitalized with bronchitis on 30/3/1917. Rejoined unit 30/9/1917 before returning to hospital with bronchitis on 13/11/1917. RTA 31/1/1918 and discharged from AIF 25/3/1918.

Hat badge issued by Royal Corp Australian Army Ordnance. Queens crown at top of garter with motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense". Ribbon at bottom with corp name in metallic gold. Shield shaped crest in garter shows 3 cannon balls in a row at top with 3 cannon displayed vertically beneath, in silver coloured metal. 2 pins mounted on back with clasps.

Replica bronze metal medal in the shape of a Maltese Cross, embossed with a crowned lion. Embossed scroll bears words 'FOR VALOUR' . Maroon ribbon attached to medal via a bar and loop. On the reverse the word 'COPY' has been stamped.

This six-postcard group is the third in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. The 57th had a company of men largely from Bendigo and Eaglehawk. These postcards are from his personal album. Many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject.
