In 2015 during the development of the 2016 Commodores, which were to introduce the larger 6.2 litre LS # V8 engine, The decision was made ro return to the Nurburgring to attempt a sub eight minute lap, that success an ideal way the proposed Magnum range. This was the car chosen, a prototype ute, dubbed "McQueen" and a redline magnum development vehicle under a small team of engineers, it was extensively tested at Lang Lang proving ground and then track tested at Philip Island and Winton raceways to ensure that it had the necessary speed, handling and reliability.
