This matches holder, a common item in the early 20th century, has been produced to commemorate the reign of King George 5th of England. It may have been produced for his coronation in 1911.


This item is of no known provenance but it is of some interest since it is a souvenir of the reign of King George 5th.

Physical description

A rectangular shaped brown metal matches container. It is rounded on one side and has a striking mechanism on the other side and a lift up lid at the top. There is a circular inset with an image of King George 5th and Queen Alexandra in sepia tones with a clear perspex cover. Inside the container are five wooden matches with red heads.
