Summary
The Divine Comedy is a 14th-century epic poem that serves as a profound allegory of the soul's journey toward God. It is divided into three parts (Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso). In book two, Purgatory follows Dante and his guide, the Roman poet Virgil, as they leave the horrors of Hell behind and climb Mount Purgatory. While Hell is structured as a funnel descending into the earth, Purgatory is a massive mountain in the Southern Hemisphere consisting of seven terraces, each representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins (Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, and Lust).
