The Ballarat School of Mines merged with the University of Ballarat in 1998. In December 1997 the staff buried a time capsule, to be opened in 2020, the 150th anniversary of establishment of the Ballarat School of Mines. Due to Covid19 lockdowns the time capsule was not opened until 2022/
