John Burder Backhouse (1855-1935) was elected as a representative of the North Ward for the Town of Brighton in 1893, becoming Mayor in 1898. After an appointment as the sole resident medical officer at the Alfred Hospital, he set up a private medical practice in Brighton in 1887.
