Sarah Contos is a multidisciplinary artist working across various modes of collage, sculpture and installation. Contos explores identity, eroticism, femininity, materiality, popular culture and history. She describes her life in relation to contradictions, saying: “I make quilts for art but never for warmth. I watch cooking shows but never cook. I want to cover my home in florals, but it ends up in wine stains.”
Total Control is a quilted textile work notable for its screen-printed surface of imagery sourced from 1970s editions of the provocative Australasian Post magazine. Contos’ use of dangling fabric tubes, coils and pillows, and fabric patches draw allusions to the body; these elements are both familiar and confronting.
