Formally trained in painting, Silke Raetze’s practice encompasses a variety of different mediums and techniques, including text-based cross-stitch embroidery. Raetze explores the undercurrents of love and lust, hopes and disappointments.
These three works offer an ironic response to the polite tradition of cross-stitch and the moral teachings that the content of cross-stitch samplers were designed to impart to young girls. The design of these works mimic the aesthetics of Victorian era cross-stitch, but the messages contained within offer a wry commentary on the contemporary state of gender relations and family life.
