Gus (Augustino) Mercurio was born in Wisconsin, and his career includes being a boxer, a mess steward in the merchant marine, the US Marine Corps, and a chiropractor. He first came to Australia in 1956 with the USA Olympic team, working as a chiropractor. He also became an actor and commentator on boxing.
