This set of two group photographs of Lithographic Squadron personnel at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo probably taken on the 27th of June 1985. On this day Lithographic Squadron was participating in the Army Survey Regiment’s Freedom of Entry Parade rehearsals at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval. See item 6470.30P for photos of the parade rehearsals.

Service dress style - khaki colour wool/polyester fabric jacket with belt and trousers. 1. Jacket collar, with two lapel badges, gold and silver crown and shield with cannons and lettering. "ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ARMY ORDNANCE CORPS" shoulder epaulettes with silver and red metal crown rank insignia = MAJOR. Four front pockets. Two top patch pockets with button and two metal press studs on flap. Green and yellow service Ribbon above left pocket. Two lower inset pockets with button down flap. Two metal belt keepers insitu. Buttons - gold colour plastic with shank and metal ring. Buttons have raised emblem - crown and shield with three cannons. Brown colour cotton sateen fabric lining. No manufacturers label. 2. Belt - fabric with gold colour plastic buckle, leather belt keepers and brown plastic buttons. 3.Trousers - fabric with fob pocket, two side pockets and one inset back pocket with concealed button down flap. Button missing. Green colour polyester fabric libning, cream colour cotton waistband lining. Metal zipper fly with plastic button. White cotton label on waistband. 4. Lanyard - red colour cotton cord with knots.

Map products formed a large part of this topographic Support. The photos may have been taken at a Careers Expo or a Department of Defence promotion. This is a set of 12 photographs of A Section, 1st Topographic Survey Troop taken from the 25th of May to the 12th of June 1966 during their deployment to Vung Tau, Vietnam. Led by OC CAPT Bob Skitch, the ten personnel from A Section 1st Topo Svy Tp and six personnel from supporting units were the first contingent from the Royal Australian Survey Corps deployed to provide topographic support to the Australian Task Force in Vietnam. They arrived in Saigon, Vietnam on the 10th of June 1966 enroute to the Australian Reinforcement Unit (ARU) “back beach” camp in Vung Tau. The ten RA Svy technical personnel from 1st Topo Svy Tp deployed were: WO2 David Christie, SGT Stan Campbell, SGT Dave King, CPL Jim Roberts, CPL Dennis Duquemin, CPL Des Ceruti, SPR Derek Chambers, SPR Brian Firns, SPR Joe O’Connor and SPR Ron Smith. External personnel deployed were: WO2 Snow Rollston from Northern Command Field Survey Unit, T/CPL Peter Clarke – orderly room corporal, T/CPL Alan Carew – Technical Storeman, SPR Stan Johns – Map Storeman, SPR Boots Campbell – batman/driver and PTE BNF Brunning – cook. The ship featured in photos .1P and .2P was the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney on its 4th voyage to Vietnam. On board were SGT Stan Campbell and SPR Brian Firns, tasked to manage A Section’s stores and equipment. The rest of A Section deployed to Vietnam by air on the chartered Qantas 707B ‘City of Longreach'. A Section’s main tasks were to establish a Theatre Grid, map compilation and map revision; Engineer Survey Support in the camp and to the civil community; give assistance to the Cordon Search Missions by producing large scale plots from aerial photos with every house and fence etc plotted; and then reproduce these by silk screening usually, within a 24-hour period. RA Svy’s support concluded with the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam in 1972. More information on the A Section, 1st Topographic Survey Troop and the Army Survey Regiment’s supporting role is provided in pages 89 to 94 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.

Relates to "Edmond (Tim) Grey Bates" RAAF 20841. Enlisted 30/5/41. Discharges 30/6/45. Cpl. 1 Wireless & Gunnery School. Pacific Star awarded for Service in WW2. War medal was for all who served in the armed services or Merchant Navy in WW2. Australian Service medal was specific to Australian Citizens.

Four WW2 Service Medals. 1. 1939-45 Star. 6 pointed Star of yellow copper and zinc alloy with a dark blue, red and light blue ribbon. Attached to a ring at the top. 2. Pacific Star - 6 pointed star of copper and zinc alloy with a small ring at top and colours on ribbon of red, dark blue, green, yellow, cream, dark blue and red. 3. War Medal 1939-45. Round silver medal in copper nickel with fixed straight bar on top. Attached ribbon is a combination of red, dark blue and white. 4. Australian Service Medal - round silver color medal of nickel alloy with fixed star and bar on top and ribbon colours of light blue, red, white and dark blue.

1.& 2. A crown and "GRJ VI" on front. 3. King George VI one side and roaring lion on other. 4. King George VI on one side and Commonwealth Emblem on other.

Covered with DP camouflage canvas pouch with reinforced webbing and adjustable carry strap. Metal clips on back webbing to attach to belt and plastic clip on front to close.

1. Spur - one metal horseshoe shaped spur with buckle attached via a ring. Two brown colour leather straps insitu. 2. Straps - pair of brown leather straps to be used with spurs. these are new with owners cardboard label attached. handwritten - black ink label tied on with yellow colour cotton thread.

Owner information - black ink pen on cardboard label. "Capt McKenzie/ R.A.M.C." On reverse of cardboard - black ink print "YANKE/ Whiteaway, Laidlaw/ BOMBAY/ Made in US."

1. Jacket - Mess Dress style. Black and crimson colour wool fabric. Crimson colour fabric on rolled collar and sleeve cuffs. On collar are two gold and silver metal collar badges - crown, snake on pole, laurel wreath and ribbon scroll with lettering "ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS" British - Tailor made. Shoulder epaulettes - fabric with three tarnished gold, blue and green metal rank pips = Captain. Gold colour buttons with shank, raised emblem and lettering (same as collar badges). Lining - crimson colour body of jacket with concealed internal pocket. Sleeves - white colour cotton fabric. Manufacturers label on white colour cotton fabric, back, inside collar. 2. Vest - crimson colour wool fabric, front two inset pockets and four buttons (as above). Back - crimson colour cotton sateen fabric with strap and brass metal buckle for size adjustment. Lining - cream colour cotton fabric. 3. Trousers - black colour wool fabric with five button fly, fob pocket cream colour cotton lining to waistband and fob pocket. Black colour Bakelite buttons. Two silver colour metal buttons at back. Manufacturers label on white colour cotton label with black ink print and handwritten details - back, inside below waistband lining. 4. & 5. Part of crimson colour wool fabric three 1.5 cm strips on black colour wool fabric backing. These have been removed from a garment.
