Physical description

Polished scrimshaw whale's tooth depicting a traditional whaling scene on one side. A whaling boat sits alongside a whale in the sea. There are four men seated in the boat with a standing man at each end. The man standing nearest to the whale holds a harpoon. The whale can be seen with water coming from the blowhole. On reverse, labelled 'Portland 700 tons of oil harvested', inscribed with date '1836.
