Today’s Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos were under French rule from the 1880s until 1954. The Vietnam War has its origins in the Indochina wars. During the French Indochina War (1946 - 1954), France’s war effort against nationalist groups such as Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh was largely funded by the United States.
