Val Cameron: You know, when you start thinking about it, we didn't have dedicated ambulance drivers. We had volunteer ambulance drivers in those days and we would just ring up so and so, ring up Tom, can you come? We need you to go to an accident or whatever. They were mostly tradies and older men.
And they would just drop everything and do it. This was before, before the air ambulance started. Because we eventually got Geelong to send down trainers. And they came down once a week and trained our volunteer ambulance drivers. And if the helicopter was coming, we also used the helicopter in later times. Because the football field is where the chopper and the small plane could land out of the airfield. The chopper came down in the footy field. We would just get on the phone and ring the pub if it was at night and say, the chopper's coming in, go and get the lights going. So, the men, plus, the ambulance drivers that we had there, plus anybody else, would all converge on the footy field with their headlights on. It's amazing when you think. Everybody pulled together. Really was amazing.
